If you live in Texas, you have all kinds of choices when it comes to placing your baby for adoption! You are in control and have the power to make decisions for you and your baby’s future.
From choosing whether to be a part of the process of choosing your baby’s birth parents, to choosing how much contact you want to have with your child after birth, you can create your own adoption story. We at Texas Adoption Center will walk alongside you on your journey every step of the way.
Here’s a look at a few choices you have regarding adoption in Texas:
Adoption Agency versus Adoption Attorney
In Texas you can go through an adoption agency or through an adoption attorney to legally place your baby.
Adoption agencies provide resources for birth mothers wanting to place their baby for adoption. From finding the perfect adoptive parents for the child, to assisting birth mothers emotionally, physically and financially--adoption agencies can walk you through every step of the adoption process.
Working with an adoption attorney, also known as an independent adoption, provides a different experience than working with an agency. Adoption attorneys handle all the legal aspects of processing an adoption. However, they don’t always provide the same level of ongoing support and resources that agencies do.
Open versus Semi-Open versus Closed Adoptions
If you place your baby for adoption, you get to choose the level of communication you’d like to have with your child after you give birth. You can opt for an open, semi-open or closed adoption.
Open adoptions allow you to pick and build a relationship with your baby’s adoptive parent(s). You have the option to exchange contact information with the family and to spend time with your baby and her new family at the hospital. After birth, if you want to, you can stay in contact with the family through phone calls, texts and potentially an in-person visit. This is a popular option for birth mothers because of the flexibility it allows!
Semi-open adoptions are similar to open adoptions! If you wish, you can choose your baby’s family and meet them prior to delivery. With this adoption, you can receive pictures and letter updates as your child grows up. However, this adoption does not include personal visits or personal contact with your child after the adoption.
Closed adoptions are less common. With this option, an adoption agency picks a family for you. Typically, you don’t meet or build a relationship with the family and don’t have any contact with the family or your child after she’s born. However, this option still allows some flexibility! You can choose how “closed” the process is.
